WW II veterans honored

Arbor Trace Health and Living in Richmond, Indiana honored the World War II veterans in the community on June 6th with a special luncheon. The veterans were hosted by the American Legion Riders at the VFW post 1108 in Richmond. This year is the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Seven of Arbor Trace’s residents were transported to the VFW post at noon to have their distinguished service noted. After lunch there were speeches by Richmond’s Mayor Sally Hatton, and State Senator Allan Paul, where each veteran was recognized for their service. According to activity director Tonya Pennington, “We had six men and one woman attend.” “We have this amazing group of men and women who fought and sacrificed for our freedom, we can never thank them enough.”
On June 10th resident Eloise Bennington celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at the community. The celebration was held in the Colonnade room which was decorated with balloons and streamers. Family and residents enjoyed cake and ice cream. Eloise was the queen of the day and rightly so. She has an enthusiasm for life and brings a joy to everyone in the community.
The administrator of Arbor Trace, Andrew Buzzard, has brought his love of gardening to the community. In June, Andrew had 6 raised garden structures built. The gardens were planted by the community, to help bring fresh produce to the residents and the kitchen. Tomatoes, peppers, and cauliflower are growing and the residents are looking forward to the harvest. The gardens are situated outside the resident’s dining room where they are able to watch the transformation from seeds to vegetables. “There is nothing better than a fresh tomato off the vine,” said Andrew. “We know this is a wonderful experience for our elders.” “Many of them grew gardens as they were growing up and we want them to enjoy the memories, and of course to eat the fruit of their labor.”
