Meet Tammy Mervin LPN

Many people encounter challenges in life and hang their heads with fear or look for someone to bail them out. Not so with Tammy Mervin, who found herself at age 34 to be a divorced single mom with a 14-year-old daughter. At the time Tammy was a kitchen manager at Highland Heights Elementary School in Richmond, Indiana. “I had been there for 14 years,” Tammy said, “I felt like I needed a better paying job with benefits and I was looking for something I’d enjoy.” Tammy enrolled in night classes at Ivy Tech in Richmond to get her LPN degree. She worked full time at the school, raised her teenage daughter, and maintained a full class schedule at Ivy Tech.

“At the time I was going to school my father-in-law had bone cancer and I was also taking care of him,” she said. “Caring for him helped me decide I wanted to work in geriatrics.” Tammy finished her degree and took a job at Arbor Trace in Richmond, Indiana. “For a while I was still working at the school during the day and at Arbor Trace at night.”

Tammy realizes a satisfaction working with seniors. “It is rewarding to hear every day how glad they are to see me. All people need and want compassion and understanding. That is the attitude I have with my residents,” she stated.  “I am very happy here. It is enjoyable to come to work. The residents touch my heart. I love my unit, I love my residents.”

Tammy was honored as employee of the month at Arbor Trace. She was nominated by the families of the residents she serves. Tammy is one of many outstanding employees at the CarDon communities, all of whom are dedicated to providing the care that you expect and deserve.
